About Essential Oils

What are Essential Oils?

Essential oils are a natural oil, generally obtained by distillation of the plant from which it’s extracted, often by using steam. An oil is “essential” in the sense that it contains the essence of the plant’s fragrance. Other processes include expression, solvent extraction, absolute oil extraction, resin tapping, and cold pressing.

Essential oils are widely used for making theraputic recipes by Aromatherapists, as an alternative to pharmaceuticals. They are also used commercially in perfumes, cosmetics, soaps and other scented products, also for adding scents to incense and household cleaning products.

Essential Oil Homemade Products

Since ancient times essential oils have been thought to hold healing properties for everything from anxiety to acne. Many people consider these oils to be a natural alternative to modern medicine.

From everything I’ve read and heard, the debate still rages on as to whether this is indeed the case, and claims to the efficiency of any medical treatment concerning these natural remedies are subject to regulation in most countries, these days.

However having said that these natural remedies have been used for thousands of years, and passed down by generations. I’m no expert, but if someone suggested a natural remedy to me, I would be happy to give it a go because these recipes have been around for decades, and I am a guessing there’s a good reason for that right?

Healing plant oils, is a great way to describe essential oils and I really like the idea of learning about essential oils and using natural products in my home, instead of aerosols, don’t you?

For thousands of years, many cultures have relied on natural oils to treat health conditions. Just like these:

Eucalyptus Shower

*Fight cold and flu.
*Relax and soothe sore muscles.
*Alleviate skin conditions.
*Alleviate aches and pains.
*Reduce cellulite and wrinkles.
*Clean your home.
*Make personal care products.

  1. Essential Oils are becoming a big thing around here. My niece sells them and she even sent me a little bottle she made for a small boil I had on my stomach from an effected hair. Yea, I guess that’s another word for pimple. Anyway, within a few days it was healed and everything is back to normal. And yes, they can make something for your migraines as well.

  6. While reading this article, I am actually lighting my lemongrass essential (fragrance) oil at one corner of the room. I bought it a while ago and it’s meant for reed diffusion, but I lost the sticks so instead, I now use it on an aroma burner.

It’s been doing a great job emanating the aroma for the past few days. I only poured like 15 mls of oil (I have quite a big bottle) and I’ve just been refilling the water level on the burner ever since.

    Lemongrass is so relaxing ~

    1. yes it really is 🙂 hello Cathy, thanks so much for your comment, it’s great to hear you’ve found a good use for your Lemongrass essential oil, it’s a great stress reducer and sleep aid, so burning it in your bedroom could be wonderful for improving your sleep quality 🙂 There are so many amazing uses for Lemongrass that I will delve into in a future post, subscribing to my Newsletter is a great way to be kept up to date, but for now I can give you a quick recipe that you can use to ease muscle pain and cramps. Grab yourself a 10ml rollerball and add 10-15 drops of your oil in to it, then just top it up with your favourite carrier oil, just make sure you give it a good shake up before you apply it. A generous application and some gentle rubbing will ease those muscles 🙂 hope you found this helpful and I look forward to talking with you again, thanks again Cathy 🙂

  7. I have always been interested in herbal remedies etc (i try to never go to the doctor) and I do use some essential oils. I have a lavender and vanilla based room spray I made that can also be sprayed over my bedsheets. Lavender helps me to relax and therefore get to sleep better. I also have a bergamot based spray I use for cleaning down my yoga mat (it also gets rid of the manufactured smell you have when you get a new yoga mat)

    1.
